Ch. 13 Designing Web Pages

When designing a web page most people have trouble with organizing the web page so that it can be readable or understandable to the reader or user. Lots of times the webpage looks sloppy and disorganized. I can’t say much on how my webpages look or whether or not they are readable because I have very little experience with designing webpages. I mostly like to stick to designs on paper. Some of the most important design feature of a web site, I think, is the layout of the webpage. The layout is what will attract the user or reader to the page, and color! Contrasting colors will really help the website to really pop. And I guess, resolution also is important for a web page. If you don’t have good resolution then the colors won’t look good and the web page or image on the web page not look pixellated. When it comes to Style vs. Design, I honestly couldn’t tell you the difference, so I’m going to make a guess. I think style means the new in thing with design. Like the new “in” colors are the combination of blue and brown or pink and black. While design is what you do with that style. (does that make sense?)

This is the torn paper project for chapter 11. The tutorial asked to download a textured paper. But seeming how we can’t do that in class I made my own texture. I know its not textured paper but I like it.

Photoshop Tampering

Before photo shop, I’m realy not sure how people altered photos. But I will give a wild guess and please correct me if I’m wrong. I think they cut out something they wanted in one photo and then pasted it manually to another photo and then reprinted it; maybe. I think I’m wrong though.

How much tampering should you do to a magazine picture? Hmm… I’d say I understand airbrushing the photo to an extent. I don’t like it when it’s done so much that their face looks like plastic. If they hide a zit I can understand that to. I don’t think you should give the person a face lift though. That just makes the person look so fake. And I think messing with real beauty is wrong. But I guess some people will do anything to be “the most fairest of them all.”

In the photoshop disaters blog. I think “The Penthouse” was one of the worst. It is very obvious that they added that black woman in there (at least I think she’s black) or hispanic. I can’t tell. That, and the last one with the nude girl. It is very obvious that they arm was added in there as well. I could not find anything wrong with the Opra magazine cover. I could tell she was airbrushed but other than that I can’t tell.

To sum things up. Tampering with photos to an extent is wrong, and it should be used whisely.

Font Sites

The first site I found where you can download fonts was urbanfonts.com. I found this site useful and easy to use. It gives you samples on the front page and you can even search for fonts under a wide variety of catagories. Anther one is 1001freefonts.com. It also has a similar layout to the first. The third one I found was dafont.com. It also shows you some fonts on the front page and it even gives you simple directions on how to download them. One that I found that I didn’t like was free-fonts.com. It did not show you samples of fonts, and you had to search for the font by knowing the name of the font. The fifth one I found was ok; its called simplythebest.net/fonts/. It gave you a list of tags you could search the font for but it didn’t show you any exaples. Another good one that I found was searchfreefonts.com. It says it has the largest selection of free fonts and it is easy to use. I also found fontspace.com it’s a good site but you also have to sign up to get the free fonts so watch out for that. Another one I found was fonts.com. It is a site that you have to create an account with and I think you even have to pay for the fonts.

Copyrighting

Copyrighting is a good way to protect your designs or art. As a creative person my self, this copyright law allows me to protect my art and lets everybody know that it is mine. Copyrighting is important because it can prevent people from stealing someone elses work. A Creative Commons allows the person to costomize their copyright so that another person can use the work to an extent. I like the creative commons because I don’t think I would mind people using my design; thats what I made it for. I wouldn’t mind if they used it as long as they wouldn’t clame it as their own. I don’t think I know most of what the copyright law entails but I get the jist of it. Please clarify on anything if you think I am wrong.

When Picaso said that good designers copy and great designers steal I wasn’t exactly sure what he ment. Sure you can take someone elses design and spin it to make it your own or even be inspired by the art work and make up something similar to that design. I’ve done this before. I understand that good designers copy but I don’t quite understand the “great designers steal” part. Did he meen just taking someone elses work and calling it your own? If someone could clerify this, that would be nice.

Reading and Reflections

The Bauhaus school of design’s principles are good principles to go by. Every art class and school teaches them in some form or another. I have even been tought these principles in high school in a simpler way.

It’s amazing how many famous artists have come from Bauhaus and how much arcitecture came from therer as well. It seems to me that a lot of modern art comes from their schools.

Also, while reading the Bauhaus articles on the people and philosophy I noticed something interesting. That non of the people mentioned were women. It even mentions on the web page: http://bauhaus.chrissnider.com/pages/philosophy.html in the second bulleted item it states that “teachers in the school of design must be men who are in advance of their profession rather than safely and academically in the rearguard.” I’m am not sure if they did or did not have women teachers or students. The article did not mention if they did. Women were granted suffrage the same year the school was founded, so their could have been women in the schools. I don’t know much about the school other than what the 3 articles showed me. So I could be wrong on that argument. That was just something interesting that I found.

Blackberry winelabel

My father has been making wine for as long as I can remember. I guess you could say it’s a family legecy. Both my grandfathers also make wine. Although, I don’t think their’s is as good. We mostly make blackberry or grape. On occasion we would make something new if a friend of my father’s asks him to try to make something else. Last year he made watermelon wine for my boyfriends family. It is very potent. There was a lot of alcohol in to make it sweet. I personaly think that my dad makes the best blackberry. Although, I don’t really have anything to compare it to. One year he also made plum wine for a coworker of his. We can not sell the wine because my dad does not have a licence to sell it, so we give it away. He is very good at it.

I guess I should start by saying Hello World!

I have never blogged before so go easy on me.

I love to draw and read, and a little writing, which I’m not very good at.

I am also working toward a graphic design degree. I currently have knowledge in photoshop, Illistrator and InDesign, and some dreamweaver. I mostly love to work with pencil drawings and portrats. I like to think I’m good at drawing faces. But I guess in time I will let you be the judge.

If you have any constructive critisim to give to me I will welcome your honest opinion. I don’t want to get a fat head.
